It is just as important to have your dogs teeth cleaned as it is for you to visit the dentist regularly.
Periodontal Disease is the inflammation or infection of the tissues surrounding the tooth. Accumulation of tartar and calculus on the teeth contributes to gum recession around the base of the tooth. Infection soon follows and the gums recede, exposing sensitive, unprotected tooth surfaces. As the pockets deepen, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and may contribute to more complicated health issues such as kidney or heart disease. The infected bacterial pockets will, if untreated, loosen teeth and structures within the jaw. The risk of jaw fractures increases in dogs with severe periodontal disease. A veterinarian can remove plaque accumulations under general anesthesia. However, dog owners often opt not to have the procedure done because it requires the dog to be put under anesthetic. This can be dangerous, stressful, and the procedure, and pre-anesthetic testing can be costly.
